Due to smoke sensitive areas, Rx burning will be difficult and mechanical treatment will be favored. A viable FSJ family will not be realistic for this small isolated site. The closest occupied scrub habitat is 4 miles south at Oscar Scherer SP. The successful FSJ dispersal from the SP to the Bayonne site is minimal due to a major 4-lane highway in an urbanized landscape. FSJs last observed onsite in December 2002. Surrounding land uses changing to urban residential and commercial.

The park includes several sites owned by the City of Venice and maintained by Sarasota County. For FSJ monitoring purposes, adjacent public lands are also included here (USCG property, Venice Airport, and Venetian Waterway Park. There is no management plan for the park and adjacent sites and no staff directed and dedicated to land management in this overall area. Rx burning in the urban interface will be limited.

Overgrown habitat in close proximity to I-75 will require mechanical treatment and small acreage burns for smoke management. Churchill and Jordan parcels were acquired in December 2004 and April 2005 respectively, and are undergoing preliminary site security, firebreak installation, and trash and structural removal. Habitat analysis needs to be completed. No scrub habitat is on Churchill parcel. FSJs are found south of the Jordyn parcel and I-75. FSJ habitat is fragmented by I-75. Deer Prairie Creek parcels south of I-75 contains approx. 168 acres of scrub habitat.

NoOngoing efforts since 2004 to acclimatize the FSJs to humans during spring call counts continue. When the birds reach the point where they tolerate handling, a banding program will be started.
1,007
1,00770100This is a very rough estimate based on where the FSJs respond to call surveys and habitat quality. Because the ECSF birds are so skittish, it is possible other birds are persisting in the larger blocks of sub-optimal scrub, but there is no evidence for this. The 50-acre block of sand pine scrub that was logged and burned was occupied by FSJs within 2 years.

Crooked wood saleThe heart of the known FSJ territories on ECSF are fragmented lots within a subdivision. This scattered land ownership pattern makes Rx fire and other restoration activities very difficult. The fuel load and presence of Conradina etonia in the larger blocks of scrub are also complicating factors.

Property (585 acres) donated to SWFWMD by construction contractor to avoid FDEP fines for illegal dumping. There are approximately 50-60 acres of uplands, but entire property is encroached by development, and an airport to south. The restraints to prescribed burning in this area do not make it possible to conduct an aggressive scrub restoration and management project that the District is accustomed to.

"Official" FSJ surveys were going to be started, but the new CCP for Hobe Sound requires a section 7 evaluation for all research done, taking a great deal of effort. No time for this activity because of other obligations. Also a lack of funding for needed fire and mechanical treatment. Much of the sand pine on the refuge is too high for use by FSJs. More funding is needed. Lastly, there have been FSJ sightings by refuge personnel and Jonathan Dickenson SP personnel. They have been anecdotal, but JD populations may forage on the Refuge. If a corridor were opened up with some type of treatment, maybe a family of FSJs could be sustained on the refuge.

Hurricanes Jeanne and Fracis in '04 removed nearly 80% of sand pine canopy across approx. 100 acres in 2 units; understory is suitable habitat.Extremely small founder populations drastically declining despite appropriate habitat; our sites are too small and isolated by adjacent urbanization, making Rx fire difficult; invasive exotics (natal grass).

PALATKA, Fla., Jan. 19, 2005 -- A prescribed burn on approximately 475 acres in the St. Johns River Water Management District's George Kohn Conservation Easement is scheduled for Thursday morning. The easement is located in south Marion County west of the Sunnyhill Restoration Area.
The prescribed burn will use aerial ignition and should begin around 9 a.m. The burn is scheduled to be completed by early afternoon.
The controlled burn is part of the District’s land management program, and this one is designed to improve the ecology of the area and to reduce the risk of wildfires.

The FSJs are not living on District-owned lands, rather on private home lots scattered next to the property line. The habitat is very overgrown and barely suitable. There is no management on the private lands and no opportunity to do so (too many homes, can't burn). The District is doing scrub restoration in hopes of offering suitable habitat in the future.
