Conservation of gopher tortoises and their habitat takes a multi-pronged approach – including research, land management, and education. When designed effectively, education and outreach programs can generate engagement in and support for conservation efforts by the public and key decision makers.
The conference will include a special session on how to develop effective gopher tortoise education programs, create marketing materials, and implement proven strategies for public outreach. In addition to general sessions on gopher tortoise conservation, the conference will host in-depth training programs on a wide range of natural resources for educators and field trips to local natural areas.
Researchers, consultants, land managers, educators, policy makers, and students are invited present and attend.

• Finally, please consider attending the Saturday Night BBQ social and Austin Cary. Austin Cary (
http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/Facilities/forest.html
)is a great place for our social. It is in the middle of the forest with a nice hall and facility for our BBQ. We have also arranged for some awesome music. We have lined up Lee Staley, a senior at Eastside High School in Gainesville, who began playing American and British Isles fiddle music at the age of seven. He has taken first prize in the youth division of the Florida State Fiddle Contest several times, most recently in May 2009. His teachers have included his father and other Florida fiddle players, and in 2006 he completed an apprenticeship with master Irish fiddler James Kelly of Miami. Lee is often accompanied by his parents Fay Baird (banjo) and Tom Staley (guitar). Both are accomplished musicians who have toured playing old time music throughout Florida and the US.
• Hope to see you there!
