A great way to learn your butterflies is to contribute your effort to NABA butterfly counts. The traditional “4th of July” counts are done annually in June and July, which happens to be when our butterflies are usually abundant.
Butterfly counts differ from field trips, in that they are more structured. Defined routes within a 15-mile diameter circle are walked; depending upon participation, teams may be formed to allow the defined routes to be covered more efficiently. All butterflies observed are counted, and measures are taken to avoid “double-counting” of the same individual butterfly. The leader may appoint someone to tally, while others “spot.” All butterfly identification skill levels invited, and there is at least one experienced butterflyer who can resolve identification questions. Data sheets & instructions for counting will be provided.
While it is possible to join in for part of the day, most count participants will spend a fairly long day in the field, covering the defined areas. Plan accordingly.
