Title:
Spring “Dusted Skipper” Picnic
Begin:
4/12/2009 9:00 AM
End:
4/12/2009 6:00 PM
Description:
Field trip & spring picnic:
A Joint Miami Blue, Broward & Atala Chapter
outing at Jonathan Dickinson State Park
JDSP teems with wildlife in 13 natural communities, including sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves, and river swamps. About 20 percent of the park is covered in coastal sand pine scrub, a biological community so rare it is designated “globally imperiled.”
Four scenic nature trails and a bicycle trail provide rare opportunities to glimpse endangered, threatened and unique wildlife, such as the bald eagle, Florida Scrub-jay, Florida Sandhill Crane and Gopher Tortoise. The Loxahatchee River, Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, runs through the park.
April is the month the Dusted Skipper flies in the park and is the month and the specific weekend favored by Alana Edwards, President of the Atala Chapter, for JDSP butterflies in general.
Everyone should bring a picnic dish to share with other NABA friends—a salad, a dessert, a “main” dish, a picnic meat and/or cheese, whatever your culinary mood suggests. Paper plates, napkins, cutlery, beverage cups, and a cooler with cold bottled water will be provided. If you like beverages other than cold water, bring your choice of other soft drinks.
