Title:
Field Trip: Lignum Vitae Key & North Key Largo
Begin:
11/15/2008 9:30 AM
End:
11/15/2008 5:00 PM
Description:
Field Trip: Lignum Vitae Key Botanical State Park is home to – and gives the best chance of seeing – the very rare Florida Purplewing. The mature stands of Lignum Vitae trees, Crabwoods, and Gumbo Limbos are spectacular. There will also be opportunity to visit the historic features of this unique key.

After we return from our time on the key, at around 1:00 pm, and have lunch, we will head to North Key Largo and the Dagney Johnson Key Largo Botanical State Park and the Crocodile Lake NWR Butterfly Garden, both on CR 905, north of CR 905’s intersection with US Highway 1, at Mile Marker 106.

Leaders: Nadia & Jim Spencer

Practicalities:
We will leave by boat at for the short trip to Lignum Vitae Key from Robbie’s Marina at MM 77.5. We are to be at the marina, ready to board, no later than 9:30 am. Robbie’s boats hold about 8 passengers and fill up on the week-ends. SO PLEASE LET US KNOW if you’re coming, so we can ask Robbie to have enough boats available for the morning run. Email MiamiBlueEvents@bellsouth.net or call Elane at 305-666-5727.

The restaurant at Robbie’s Marina has a good breakfast—but arrive 8:00 – 8:30 am to allow an extra hour if you want to eat there.

Round trip boat transportation from Robbie’s Marina to Lignum Vitae Key costs $20. As of this writing, there was no Lignum Vitae Key Park fee. However, because the park assigns a naturalist to our group, we will ask each person to contribute $10 to an envelope; we will then send a thank-you and MBC check to the park as a donation for park upkeep.

After lunch, on North Key Largo, meet at the main entrance of Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (large arch), located on Monroe County Road 905, approximately one-half mile north of CR 905’s intersection with US Highway 1 on North Key Largo, at Mile Marker 106. Here, there is an “on your honor” park fee of $1.50. Here we will spend a little time on the pleasant walk in the park praying for a Schaus’ Swallowtail (unlikely, but the climate is changing!), and then move the short distance to the Crocodile Lake NWR Butterfly Garden where Balloon Vine grows and Silver-banded Hairstreak might be seen if we’re lucky.

For Lignum Vitae Key Botanical State Park, meet on Saturday, not one minute later than 9:30 am, for Departure at Robbie’s Marina, mm 77.5 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL (305) 664-9814.
