Dr. Smythe has had a life long interest in bugs, butterflies, and birds, beginning at age four when he began collecting feathers, butterflies and other insects. He has a BA in Biology and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the College of Wooster and the University of Wisconsin respectively. He spent 37 years working for the U.S. Forest Service – 9 years as a Research Scientist and 28 years in various administrative positions.
Dr. Smythe volunteers his knowledge and time to the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia, the Organization of Tropical Studies (a consortium of 60 universities and institutions primarily in the US and Costa Rica dedicated to research, conservation, and education in the tropics), and the Wintergreen Nature Foundation. He and his wife, Mary Smythe, take part in NABA’s July butterfly counts in Virginia and participate in NABA’s bi-annual North American membership meetings.

Don’t miss a chance to visit the celebrated Kampong, one of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens and former home of Dr. David Fairchild from 1916 to 1962. The Kampong is included in the National Register of Historic Places. This spectacular 11-acre property is bordered on the west by Douglas Road and the east by Biscayne Bay, approximately a mile south of the center of Coconut Grove. Dr. Fairchild introduced and grew at the Kampong many rare tropical plants collected during his explorations. Today the Kampong’s mission of scientific research, public education, and plant conservation is advanced by its leadership and knowledgeable staff of botanists.
