Title:
NABA Seasonal Fakahatchee Butterfly Count
Begin:
10/11/2008 8:15 AM
End:
10/11/2008 5:00 PM
Description:
The South Florida NABA chapters are collaborating with Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park to census the park's butterflies. This count has been ongoing for several years, but NABA's new count policies now will allow submission of the data from an October count to the national count database.
If you've never been to the Fakahatchee, it is a must-see place. We will go in the field with Park Biologist, Mike Owen, who is an expert on the flora of the park - particularly the orchids. We will also be joined by a local gentleman who has been surveying the butterflies of the park for many months. Last year in just 2.5 hours, he counted 167 Ruddy Daggerwings! Please let us know if you would like to go. We might be able to find a ride for you to share. If you drive, allow at least two hours from Miami's west boundaries to Copeland, where the park headquarters and the meeting place are.
Directions to Fakahatchee:
Take Tamiami Trail (US 41) west to SR29, then north to County Road 837 (a/k/a Janes' Scenic Drive). Turn west onto CR 837 and go about 1/2-3/4 mile (road curves sharply to the right). We will meet at the office (brown) 100m North of the fire tower at 8:15am. Bring food and water for the day. If you plan to attend, call Elane at 305-666-5727 or email
MiamiBlueEvents@bellsouth.net
so that we can arrange for carpooling and know who to expect.
